حسن ہے مست ناز اگر تو بھی جوابِ ناز دے

رسم و رہِ نیاز: عاجزی کا طریقہ۔

Love is exalted above the customs and usages of prayers; if Beauty has ecstasy of elegance you too give elegant reply.

جلوہ حسن کہ ہے جس سے تمنا بے تاب

پالتا ہے جسے آغوش تخیل میں شباب

THE MANIFESTATION OF BEAUTY

Beauty's manifestation which gives restlessness to Longing; which youth nurtures in its fancy's lap;

ابدی بنتا ہے یہ عالم فانی جس سے

ایک افسانہ رنگیں ہے جوانی جس سے

By which this ephemeral universe becomes eternal; by which youth becomes a colorful tale;

----------------------------------------------------------------

جو سکھاتا ہے ہمیں سر بہ گریباں ہونا

منظر عالم حاضر سے گریزاں ہونا

Which teaches us to be meditating to be escaping the present state's scene;

----------------------------------------------------------------

دور ہو جاتی ہے ادراک کی خامی جس سے

عقل کرتی ہے تاثر کی غلامی جس سے

Which removes the immaturity of perceptions; which makes Intellect a slave to impressions.

آہ! موجود بھی وہ حسن کہیں ہے کہ نہیں

خاتم دہر میں یا رب وہ نگیں ہے کہ نہیں

Ah! Does that Beauty exist anywhere or not? O Lord! Does that jewel exist on the universe' ring?

پیام

عشق نے کر دیا تجھے ذوقِ تپش سے آشنا

بزم کو مثل شمع بزم حاصل سوز و ساز دے

ذوقِ تپش: تڑپ کی لذت۔

THE MESSAGE

Love made you acquainted with the taste of affliction; like assembly’s candle give affliction’s gift to the assembly.

شانِ کرم پہ ہے مدار عشقِ گرہ کشاے کا

دیر و حرم کی قید کیا! جس کو وہ بے نیاز دے

مدار: انحصار۔

The illuminating Love depends on God’s Benevolence; to whomever He may give without restriction of temple or Haram.

صورتِ شمع نور کی ملتی نہیں قبا اُسے

جس کو خدا نہ دہر میں گریۂ جاں گداز دے

دہر: دنیا۔ 

گریۂ جاں گداز: ایسا رونا جس سے جان میں گداز پیدا ہو۔

Like the candle the mantle of light he does not get; whom God does not give effective wail in the world.

تارے میں وہ، قمر میں وہ، جلوہ گہِ سحر میں وہ

چشم نظارہ میں نہ تو سرمۂ امتیاز دے

ُرمۂ امتیاز: مراد ہے تعصب۔

He is in the star, the moon, the dawn’s theatre of display; you need not apply discrimination’s collyrium to the Sightful eye.

عشق بلند بال ہے رسم و رہِ نیاز سے

پیر مغاں! فرنگ کی مے کا نشاط ہے اثر

اس میں وہ کیف غم نہیں، مجھ کو تو خانہ ساز دے

نشاط: خوشی۔

پیرِ مغاں: شراب خانے کا مالک۔

O Tavern-keeper! Pleasure is the only effect of West’s wine; it does not have pleasure of affliction, give me the home-made wine.

تجھ کو خبر نہیں ہے کیا! بزم کہن بدل گئی

اب نہ خدا کے واسطے ان کو مے مجاز دے

بزم کُہن : پرانی تہذیب۔

Do you not know? The old congregation has changed; for God’s sake do not give them materialism’s wine.

نگاہ شوق

یہ کائنات چھپاتی نہیں ضمیر اپنا 

کہ ذرے ذرے میں ہے ذوق آشکارائی

آشکارائي: ظاہر ہونا۔

EAGER GLANCE

Contents of soul this world can not conceal, for every mote has longing to reveal.

کچھ اور ہی نظر آتا ہے کاروبار جہاں 

نگاہ شوق اگر ہو شریک بینائی

The course of life some what distinct appears, if eager looks and sight become corn peers.

اسی نگاہ سے محکوم قوم کے فرزند 

ہوئے جہاں میں سزاوار کار فرمائی

کار فرمائي: حکومت۔

سزاوار: حقدار۔

The members of a subject race by dint of glance, its gloss and grace, have acquired the right and claim to rule and get renown and fame.

اسی نگاہ میں ہے قاہری و جباری 

اسی نگاہ میں ہے دلبری و رعنائی

The glance has might to cause defeat, it has the strength, its foes to beat; we see through glance great charm and grace; it brings the lovers face to face.

اسی نگاہ سے ہر ذرے کو، جنوں میرا 

سکھا رہا ہے رہ و رسم دشت پیمائی

دشت پيمائي: بیابان میں پھرنا۔

Through self-same glance my craze imparts to motes and their most inner parts, the wont and mode of wandering tramps, who pay no heed to need of camps.

نگاہ شوق میسر نہیں اگر تجھ کو 

ترا وجود ہے قلب و نظر کی رسوائی

If fervent glance and vision keen you have not met or ever seen; your being is a source of shame on heart and sight can bring a blame.

سرود و شعر و سیاست، کتاب و دین و ہنر 

گہر ہیں ان کی گرہ میں تمام یک دانہ

يک دانہ: منفرد۔

سرود: موسیقی۔

RELIGION AND CRAFTS

Verse, music, rule, lore, creed and crafts enshrine, pearls sublime that with lustre glow and shine.

ضمیر بندہ خاکی سے ہے نمود ان کی 

بلند تر ہے ستاروں سے ان کا کاشانہ

کاشانہ: رہنے کی جگہ۔

Out from the brain of clay-born man they race, far higher than the stars, their dwelling place.

اگر خودی کی حفاظت کریں تو عین حیات 

نہ کر سکیں تو سراپا فسون و افسانہ

If they preserve the Self, life is ideal true, else life is tale or legend through and through.

ہوئی ہے زیر فلک امتوں کی رسوائی 

خودی سے جب ادب و دیں ہوئے ہیں بیگانہ

When Faith and word with Self lose contact, then nation’s self-esteem can't keep intact.

مسجد قوت الاسلام

ہے مرے سینہ بے نور میں اب کیا باقی 

'لاالہ' مردہ و افسردہ و بے ذوق نمود

بے ذوق نمود: اظہار کے ذوق کا نہ ہونا۔

Now naught remains in Muslim's breast, his heart devoid of glint and glow: He avowed with zeal 'No God but He', but dead and cold the zeal for show.

چشم فطرت بھی نہ پہچان سکے گی مجھ کو 

کہ ایازی سے دگرگوں ہے مقام محمود

دگرگوں: منتشر۔

ايازي: غلامی۔

The Muslim's state has so declined that Nature fails to know at sight, because the slavish acts of Ayaz have put Mahmud's high rank in plight.

کیوں مسلماں نہ خجل ہو تری سنگینی سے 

کہ غلامی سے ہوا مثل زجاج اس کا وجود

مثل زجاج: شیشے کی مانند۔

You have withstood the ruin of Time and kept your ground as firm as rock. Constraint has turned the Muslims weak; you put them all to shame and shock.

ہے تری شان کے شایاں اسی مومن کی نماز 

جس کی تکبیر میں ہو معرکہ بود و نبود

بود و نبود: ہستی و نیستی۔

The worship of such Muslims suits your structure immense and so vast, who with one breath that God is Great; found truth and lies away are cast.

اب کہاں میرے نفس میں وہ حرارت، وہ گداز 

بے تب و تاب دروں میری صلوہ اور درود

بے تب و تاب دروں: اندرونی تڑپ اور گرمی کے بغیر۔

The Muslim's breast is quite bereft of previous heat and ardour strong; his blessings, worship are devoid of innate heat and fret since long.

ہے مری بانگ اذاں میں نہ بلندی، نہ شکوہ 

کیا گوارا ہے تجھے ایسے مسلماں کا سجود؟

شکوہ: دبدبہ۔

His call to prayer is devoid of lofty tones and grandeur great; O God, let this be known to him, will you let him 'fore you prostrate?

مجھ کو معلوم ہیں پیران حرم کے انداز 

ہو نہ اخلاص تو دعوئے نظر لاف و گزاف

لاف و گزاف: لاف زنی۔

RELIGION AND EDUCATION

I know the modes of those who guide the creed, though lacking truth, of vision boast, indeed.

اور یہ اہل کلیسا کا نظام تعلیم 

ایک سازش ہے فقط دین و مروت کے خلاف

The teaching that the English have devised 'gainst Faith and ties has great intrigue contrived:

اس کی تقدیر میں محکومی و مظلومی ہے 

قوم جو کر نہ سکی اپنی خودی سے انصاف

That race is doomed to bondage and much pain, which justice for its Ego can't attain. 

----------------------------------------------------------------

فطرت افراد سے اغماض بھی کر لیتی ہے 

کبھی کرتی نہیں ملت کے گناہوں کو معاف

اغماض: چشم پوشی۔ 

The faults of one man Nature can reprieve, but groups for crimes no par don can receive.
